U.S. planning to avert Pakistani children from Islam through TV –

U.S. planning to avert Pakistani children from Islam through TV –

The United States is planning a television programming project targeting Pakistani children in what many describe as an attempt to win the hearts and minds of the younger generation and neutralize growing anti-American sentiments.

“This project is nothing new. It’s the old wine in new bottle,” Z.R Jafri, a veteran writer, told

“The aim of this media invasion is to settle down in the minds of our children that the religious-minded people are behind terrorism, therefore they must stay away from religion.”

The US Aid Agency for International Developments (USAID) has recently advertised the plan in local newspapers seeking proposals from Pakistani and US firms involved in the making of children programs for developing television and multi-media programming for Pakistani children.

A sum of Rs 1.5 billion (20 million dollars) has been allocated to the four-year program.

The purpose of the program, according to Sohail Hummayun, one of the USAID officials involved in this project, is to develop the language, problem-solving and critical thinking abilities among Pakistani children.

Many are suspicious of the project.

“There is no free lunch in America,” says Hafiz Hussain Ahmad, a former parliamentarian and central leader of Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI), which represents the powerful Dubendi school of thought in Pakistan.

“It doesn’t invest anything anywhere without any interest. Therefore, whatever America is investing here, is not at all without any interest.”

The US embassy spokesman in Islamabad Richard Snelsire avoided commenting on the proposed plans.

“The contract has not been awarded yet so we are legally restricted in what we can say,” he told IOL.

He denied accusations that it is a politically-motivated program to win the hearts and minds of Pakistani children.

“No it’s a development program.”

Some believe that though the three main objectives of the project seem to be clear and harmless, their far-reaching effects would be dangerous.

“Language is the most important tool of the social and mental development of a child. A child starts thinking and speaking through this tool,” notes Shahnawaz Farooqi, a renowned thinker and writer.

“If the language model is American, then automatically the way of thinking will also be American.”

Farooqi, who writes about social and political issues, is also critical of the problem-solving objective of the American program.

“Apparently, there is no harm in teaching the children problem-solving. This is a very good thing. But here are two lists of the priorities in life. One list is Islamic, and the second list is western. Do you think, America will teach our children about Islamic list of priorities in life?”

Although he believes in the importance of critical-thinking, Farooqi is still suspicious about its inclusion in the TV programming.

“Keeping the behavior of the West against Islam in view, the development of critical thinking abilities among Muslim children means to develop the ability to see the Islamic belief and tenets with a critical eye.”

Jafri shares the same concern.

“They are trying to establish that every bearded person, who offers prayers five times a day, actually supports this terrorism, which is totally wrong.”

Ahmad, the JUI leader, believes the basic purpose of the project is to counter growing anti-US sentiments.

“Youths and children have been developing anti-US sentiments because of its unjust and uncalled for policies all over the world, especially in Muslim countries,” he told IOL.

“I believe this is an effort to counter this phenomenon.”

But he believes the project will not work out.

“Instead of investing such huge amounts to brainwash Muslim children, America should reconsider its policies to win the hearts and minds of our children.

“Such kind of cosmetic efforts have neither worked in the past, nor will they do in the future.”

Mass raids against mosques in Germany. Islamic books and computers confiscated –

Mass raids against mosques in Germany. Islamic books and computers confiscated –

On January 2, the German police conducted mass raids and searches in mosques and Moslem homes throughout Germany. Computers, information media and books were seized.

The raids were conducted in 30 locations in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony.

German authorities allege that the authors of the confiscated materials called for violence against women.

The seized materials include first of all a German translation of the book called “Women under the protection of Islam” that was declared “discriminatory and extremist” by German authorities.

According to the newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitung, the police explained its anti-Muslim attacks by an opinion of a “federal agency for youth harmful media” dated 30 January 2009 that the German translation of the book “Women under the protection of Islam”, first published in the Saudi Arabia, should be placed in a list of dissent literature. Why purely Islamic books worry so much the un-Islamic police, the police did not bother to explain.

The German police heard about this book, as they said, when they listened an Islamic preacher Pierre Vogel (Abu Hamza) in summer 2009. So the raids were conducted against the apartments of Abu Hamza and 2 more Islamic preachers.

The raids were carried in 30 locations throughout Germany. Now the police, as they say, do not know how to make the life of Muslims even more difficult and what charges to bring against them, since even according to German laws Muslims committed nothing criminal in this case.

Earlier in Germany, raids were conducted against a Turkish charity organization Milli Gorus. The police raided 12 offices in North Rhine-Westphalia. Searches of Moslem homed also took place in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich.

Managers of Milli Gorus were accused of “a misuse of membership dues, as well as of a delay or improper withholding of mandatory social insurance payments in cash”.

Anti-Islamic actions of the authorities in Germany were committed against the background of statements by the French president Sarkozy to ban Muslim women wearing shawls (niqab) in the country.

As is known, before “enlightment” came to Europe, shawls were obligatory for Christian women in every Christian country, including France. Sarkozy has a chance to see it himself if he ever visits a Christian church in France. There he could see icons and statutes of Virgin Mary and all Christian saint women wearing an obligatory shawl.

Earlier, an anti-Islamic referendum for banning the erection of minarets was held in Switzerland.

Concentration camp ‘Guantanamo’ –

In The Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful

Concentration camp ‘Guantanamo’ –

When three young prisoners died in June 2006 in the American concentration camp of Guantanamo, the cause of death was officially declared as a suicide. Now the journalistic investigation conducted by Harper’s based on the disclosing testimony of former prison guards puts the official version into question.

The information received by magazine suggests that the prisoner hostages – a 37-year-old Yemeni and two 30- and 22 year-old Saudis – were tortured to death during an interrogation.

The matter was hushed up, the perpetrators did not receive any punishment, and the internal investigation confirmed suicide claim.

Harper’s wrote that the crimes were most likely committed in a certain sensitive site called” by the guards at the Guantanamo Bay, the very existence of which had been denied.

The prisoners were moved there in a special van, and contrary to usual prison rules, the transfer was not registered in prison files.

The disclosure of information about this camp is in itself an important result of the journalistic investigation.

The article in Harper’s tells about the events that took place under the previous Republican administration of George W. Bush in the United States. However, it may cast a shadow on the current Democratic “team” of Barack Obama, especially if it turns out that it “did not conduct a serious inquiry – and perhaps even continues to protect – the possible murder of the three detainees in Guantanamo in 2006”, the magazine says.

The magazine reminds that Obama has not kept his campaign promise to close the Guantanamo concentration camp within a year where the US authorities brought captured and abducted prisoners from every corner of the globe.

The article in Harper’s immediately provoked indignant reaction from the American human rights groups. The organization “Evidence Against Torture” held a symbolic vigil protest at the entrance to the Pentagon on Tuesday morning, January 19, and organized a similar rally at the White House on Tuesday night.

It calls for a thorough independent investigation of the facts contained in the article.
